"Hmm... it's a beta." Microsoft's recent pull the clever lever
I have a great circle of friends. Many of them, as it has been my whole life, exemplify the finer parts of Dorky Geek-Nerdom, and frankly that's a great majority of the reason I adore them as much as I do. One such person is my very good friend Mike. Mike works with computers and, defying all conventional stereotypes (most of which are WRONG by the way), has a fantastic sense of humor and great personality. He's usually very quick on the uptake in any conversation and I've rarely seen him pause at understanding anyone's sense of humor.
This weekend when Alan and I were visiting Mike and his wife, Mike was discussing the finer points of Microsoft's new beta release OS with Alan. He paused for a moment and then sheepishly began to discuss the background that comes as the Default for Windows 7.

This image is NOT the background, but the same kind of fish, a beta or betta, is pictured on it. Mike said, "I couldn't figure it out until I said out loud, Why would they use a beta... oh."
It was something worth mentioning because the level of clever here is pretty high, so word of mouth was bound to happen, which, I'm betting, is why the MS marketing department went with it.
What's your level of clever on your property today? Are you posing square footage, or how that square footage matters? What about a visual pun? Though people groan, they sure do remember them. The higher your level of clever, the more buzz you generate, and that's marketing power that money can't buy. Try pulling your clever lever today and see what you can come up with!
