I'm Heather. I live in Seattle and I work in the Multi Family Housing Industry with my company BTLD Consulting Services as a Consultant, Speaker, and Trainer. I'm going to throw this out there... I LOVE MY JOB!!! I also love marketing, resident retention, and helping out people. I like pretty much everyone, my dog, my Alan, and have special fondness for eating honey straight from the comb and putting seasoned salt on popcorn or cottage cheese.

Because I love my local NAA affiliate, the Washington Multi Family Housing Association, I'm dedicating this space to letting my local readers know what's up coming that they might want to get in on!

January 24th - Mastering your Mystery Shop workshop presented by the very talented Yolanda! Member cost is $25 and space is limited, so sign up as soon as possible.

"Word of Mouth Marketing" by Andy Sernovitz

This book is awesome. Andy's writing style is smooth and personable, so the book is an easy read. His message is simple, elegant and powerful. People talk. No matter what, they're going to talk and word of mouth is one of the most powerful marketing tools available to any professional or company. If you want to get the most out of word of mouth it's up to YOU to get involved in the conversation in a genuine and honest way. I highly recommend reading this book! It's definitely one that you'll want on your bookshelf!

"Whoever Makes The Most Mistakes Wins" by Farson and Keyes

I saw this book at my local library and it looked like a quick fun read, so I decided that it should come home with me. I have to tell you, I wish I had bought this book because the examples of how failure isn't the end and how it is an integral part of success are inspiring. In the economy that we are in currently, this is a book that I think every property management office should have, and everyone who's looking for a job or trying to hang on to the one they have should read! The writing is clear and it is a very easy read with lots of great information in it.

"The Green Book: The Everyday Guide to Saving the Planet One Simple Step at a Time" by Elizabeth Rogers and Thomas Kostigen

You'd better get yourself a copy of The Green Book! It's an easy read, only 224 pages, and those pages are packed with ideas and implementations from celebrities. It probably costs less than you spent on that latte and your lunch. Actually, buy a copy of it used on line or from Half Price Books. It's even more eco-friendly that way. Reused AND printed on recycled paper! Probably with soybean based inks! I love it!!!

It's the first ever National Apartment Careers month! I'm so excited about this month and the focus that's been put on our industry as a career of choice, rather than a, "job I just tripped and fell into." The National Apartment Association has put out some awesome resources for recruiting this month and I want to encourage you to check them out, whether you're a property manager who does some hiring from time to time, or you're a main recruiter at a large company. These brochures and fliers are great for awareness and make excellent tools for job fairs, and the folks over at Apartment Careers.Com have even put together a special offer for employers.
